what to expect
blackwork sessions vary more by design than most styles, since the balance of solid black to fine line changes how long a piece takes to fill. a mid-sized ornamental piece typically runs a single sitting of three to four hours; larger pieces with heavier black coverage are usually planned across more than one session, since packing solid black evenly takes real time, and we give it that time for a smooth, even finish. consultation focuses on getting the balance of black to line right on paper first, so that ratio is settled before the session begins.
the detail
blackwork is solid, packed black used as structure rather than shading: heavy shapes doing the load-bearing work, fine linework holding the detail inside them, dotwork filling the space between where needed. the craft is in the balance: black and line weighted so each supports the other, with the detail inside the heavy shapes always reading clearly. that's why the ratio is worked out at the drawing stage, where it matters more here than in almost any other style, and why it's planned properly at consultation, well before the day itself.
four artists here work in it: raf, lana, ashlee and madi, across ornamental florals, japanese subjects, gothic pieces and bolder graphic work, each landing on a slightly different balance of black to line. matching you to the right one of the four is part of the consultation, not an afterthought, since lana's stipple-shaded structure and ashlee's ornamental lace work each bring out something different in a design, even though both sit under the same style. every design is built specifically for the piece in front of us, not adapted from something drawn for someone else.
blackwork ages about as well as tattooing gets. solid black holds its saturation for decades in a way that fine detail and colour both struggle to match, which is exactly why it was the dominant style for so much of tattooing's history before finer machines and pigments made other approaches practical. that permanence is the point: a big solid piece is there for good, and difficult to cover or laser away cleanly, so we take time with you on placement and scale until you're completely certain. it's made for people who know exactly what they want, and if it's your first tattoo, we'll help you get there before anything is booked in.
it reads clearly from across a room, which is the whole point of the style, and it's made for bold statement pieces. bring an open mind about proportion to your consultation: what looks balanced as a small sketch on paper often needs the black pushed further, or pulled back, once it's scaled up to actual tattoo size. that's a conversation we have properly, on paper, before the stencil goes anywhere near skin, so the session itself is about bringing a plan you're both happy with to life.
